It's interesting when you consider that it's the same captains of industry who have made such a mess of things now, that large swaths of the working class have shrugged their shoulders and walked away. While we can’t get enough of the disconnect from reality that THC brings to the table or the medicinal properties of CBD, one of our favorite parts of the marijuana experience is the high thoughts that pop into our heads during a particularly entertaining smoke sesh. It is reminiscent of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, in which she proposed a scenario where taxes and government regulation become so cumbersome that the captains of industry simply walked away. Well it appears that a good portion of the workforce has decided that it has had enough and walked away. They say that they want everybody at the office in order to improve collaboration, but at the end of the day, they want to see you with their own eyes and to make sure that you are working.Īnd they want you to know that you are under their thumb. These companies regard their employees not as people, but as resources to be controlled and manipulated to maximum effect. These guys don't care whether the work gets done. These people have become enlightened to the fact that most jobs these days are not about doing anything, but instead catering to a boss who needs to feel important. The workers who are not coming back to the job have come to realize that it was never about getting work done or accomplishing much of anything. If workers are getting the job done at home, why is it so important that they come back to the office? Perhaps the most telling of it all comes from major companies like Google and Apple who are trying to make employees return to the office who were doing just fine working from home. It's tough to say what became of all of them.īut, it's pretty apparent that corporate America, in its desire to return employees back to the work site, even during the second round of a pandemic, the Delta Variant, has no clue about the cultural and societal changes we are going through right now. Some went back to school and got a degree and moved up in life. People started finding other ways to exist. These workers spent enough time away from their jobs and came to realize just what toxic situations they were enduring on a day-to-day basis. The American workplace can be as toxic as an EPA Superfund site. So, if it isn't money related, it has to be something else. The money has dried up and yet these people are still not returning to work. In most of these states where the federal benefits have ended, businesses are still facing a steep worker shortage. The only problem is, it hasn't worked out that way. Their belief is that when the benefits are cut off, those people will go back to work. It's part of the Republican Cannon that these people are lazy and stopped working because the government started paying them not to work. Cutting off unemployment and other pandemic aid may not bring back workers. And a few months ago, many states run by Republican governors started to cut off that Federal benefit. When President Joe Biden signed his own version of a stimulus package, the additional benefit was cut down to $300 a week. But with the stimulus spending, and the $600 a week that many were getting in addition to their unemployment benefits, some workers were doing better than they were actually working.Īnd many Republicans like to throw that situation out there as a reason for the worker shortage. At first, it was hurtful to them to lose their jobs. These people were discarded like a moldy sack of tangerines. When the restaurant industry, along with retail, had to lay off thousands of workers, it sent them a message of how truly worthless they are to these companies. In fact, money might be the least of the problems. And yet, these openings still go unfilled.Īnd while it's possible that money had something to do with people losing their motivation to work, it's not the only problem. Now, it seems common to see job listings with sign on bonuses included in the headline. There was not a labor shortage heading into the pandemic nearly a year and a half ago. You know it's pretty bad when the people doing the hiring aren't even showing up for work.Īs I take a moment to enjoy some Sour Pineapple, an amazing narrow leaf dominant hybrid flower shared with me by Green Label DMV, I'm going to break down what some are calling the "Great Resignation." There's a severe shortage of truck drivers, factory workers, office assistants, and believe it or not, human resource officers. But this extends far beyond these categories. It's most easily recognized when you go to any kind of restaurant or retail establishment. Throughout the country, there's a shortage of workers. The workers have discovered a poor pay check is no reason to continue to suffer at the hands of employees
